Originally constructed in the mid-1970’s to transport oil from Marcus Hook to Martins Creek, the existing 84-mile Interstate Energy Company (IEC) pipeline runs through five Pennsylvania counties: Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks and Northampton. In 1996, IEC converted the northern 34 miles of the pipeline, extending from western Bucks County to Northampton County, to deliver natural gas.
The Adelphia Gateway project will convert the remaining 50 miles of existing pipeline in southeastern Pennsylvania from oil to natural gas. Since existing infrastructure is being used, there will be limited construction and minimal environmental impacts. As part of the project, Adelphia also proposes to construct a new above ground gas valve facility within Concord Township.

In order to proceed with their plans, Adelphia Gateway, LLC has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) seeking a certificate of public convenience and necessity authorizing the acquisition, construction and operation of the 84-mile pipeline and related facilities in Pennsylvania. (FERC is the independent administrative agency that regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas.)
Since Concord Township Council’s main priority is the safety, health and welfare of our residents, they have directed the Township’s Solicitor to file a motion to intervene as a party with full rights to participate in all further proceedings regarding Adelphia’s FERC application. The motion filed notes, “Concord Township requests party standing as the construction, operation and maintenance of the pipeline will adversely impact Concord Township and its residents.
